Senators and Representatives Deliver Letter to Obama Urging U.S. to Join Mine Ban Treaty
Sixty-eight Senators signed a letter to President Obama on May 18 asking the administration to accede to the Mine Ban Treaty. The 68 Senators, including ten Republicans and two Independents, constitute more than the two-thirds of the Senate that would be needed to ratify the treaty if the administration submits the treaty to the Senate for consent. Sen. Patrick Leahy (VT-D) and Sen. George Voinovich (OH-R) circulated the Senate letter, and a similar letter in support of the Senate initiative was circulated by Rep. James McGovern (MA-D) and Rep. Darrell Issa (CA-R) in the House.
