Write a Letter to Law-makers
One of the best ways to express our views to our elected officials is
to write a letter (typed or hand-written is fine). To find out the name
and contact information for your U.S. Senators and Representatives, go
to http://capwiz.com/fconl/home/ or
call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Below is
a sample letter.
Date
Dear Senator or Representative,
Please cosponsor the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection
Act (S. 416/H.R. 981), which states that, “Cluster munitions will
not be used where civilians are known to be present or in areas normally
inhabited by civilians.”
I am alarmed by the many reports detailing
the large numbers of civilian casualties caused by the use of indiscriminate
cluster bombs around the world. These casualties occur because cluster
bombs cover a wide area and leave behind landmine-like duds. As a result,
civilians and U.S. and allied soldiers are killed or maimed when they
stumble across these duds.
The use of cluster bombs has been condemned
by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the International Committee of the Red Cross,
the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Christian relief group World
Vision. Ninety-five nations signed a treaty banning
these weapons in 2008.
I would like you to add your name to this growing list. Please take action to
stop preventable harm to civilians by co-sponsoring the Cluster Munitions Civilian
Protection Act (S. 416/H.R. 981) today.
Sincerely,
Your Name and address
